Sports mouthguards dentist

Which sports require mouthguards?

Use of a custom made mouthguard is generally recommended for any sport where there is a risk of contact to the teeth or face. This extends beyond traditional ‘contact sports’ to any sports where collision with other players or balls might reasonably be expected. The Australian and American Dental Associations recommend mouthguard use for:

  • AFL

  • Basketball

  • Boxing

  • Hockey

  • Ice hockey

  • Gymnastics

  • Lacrosse

  • Martial arts

  • Rugby

  • Soccer

  • Squash

  • Volleyball

  • Water polo

  • Wrestling

The above list is not comprehensive and some discretion is suggested with any sport involving risk of physical injury. It is important that mouthguards are worn both during competitive sport and during training as many injuries occur during practice.
